Amrat Hussain Brothers
India
Biography
Tabla virtuoso, Amrat Hussain, recipient of a Fryderyk Award (Polish Grammy 2016) and the prestigious Al Farabi Award (presented by the National Committee of Music of Morocco in 2018), brings together his brothers Sanjay Khan and Teepu Khan to present an evening of both classical and Sufi music from Northern India.
Enriched by years of experience, their course has led them to some of the world’s finest and largest stages playing countless concerts and festivals, such as Les Nuits de Fourviere (Lyon, France), the Sziget Festival (Budapest, Hungary), the Paléo Festival (Nyon, Switzerland), and the Pori Jazz Festival (Pori, Finland).
Heirs to an extraordinary destiny, the brothers learned their musical craft as children from their father, Ustad Rafeek Mohammed and grandfather, Ustad Rasool Khan Sahab, as part of a seven generation-long tradition – each man handing down a legacy of respect, dedication and spirituality. Thus, this captivating and precious cultural heritage has been preserved, and lives on to delight modern audiences around the world.
Sanjay Khan then mastered classical, Sufi and traditional singing styles from Ustad Amir Khan Sahab (Tonkwale), Ustad Munir Khan Sahab (known for sarangi), Ustad Gulam Ali and Ikram Khan. His extraordinarily refined and richly ornamented vocals escort listeners on this soulful and poetic journey, while tabla maestros Amrat Hussain and Teepu Khan’s commanding percussion drive forward the intricate, powerful narrative of Northern Indian rhythms and melodies.
The Amrat Hussain Brothers Trio present a haunting performance showcasing breath-taking skill and joyful passion sure to be remembered and savored by all.
